OMRON Healthcare supports May Measurement Month, the largest global public blood pressure screening campaign to fight against hypertension
By Omron Healthcare, 01 May 2021 - 31 May 2021
Anyone can check their blood pressure for free during May* in cities, towns, and villages across 100 countries and receive advice about what to do next if found hypertensive.
More than 4 million people have been screened so far in the previous 3 years[1]. 80% of these readings were taken using OMRON’s automatic blood pressure monitors[2], donated for the campaign.
OMRON Healthcare -a global leader in clinically proven, innovative medical equipment for health monitoring and therapy- announces the donation of a new tender of automatic blood pressure monitors, to support the development of May Measurement Month (MMM), the largest global public blood pressure screening campaign to fight against hypertension[3].
May Measurement Month is led by the International Society of Hypertension (ISH) at the international level and activated in more than 100 countries simultaneously throughout the month of May. Volunteers working for the campaign take people’s blood pressure for free in public locations and provide advice about what to do next when a person is registered as hypertensive. To find out the location of their closest screening site, the public is advised to visit the global campaign’s website maymeasure.com and register to receive a notification once a screening site in their surroundings is available.
In the past 3 editions of May Measurement Month, more than 4 million people were screened. Of these, almost 1 million discovered to have untreated or inadequately treated hypertension[4], highlighting the importance of regular blood pressure screenings in all age groups and backgrounds. The campaign aims to increase awareness of hypertension and to motivate governments to improve blood pressure screening facilities.
According to the International Society of, increasing access to blood pressure screening is potentially the most effective way to reduce hypertension’s adverse toll on health. Hypertension currently causes over 10 million deaths each year[5] and is the most significant single contributing risk factor to global death[6].
- Healthcare blood pressure monitors’ accuracy has been clinically validated under vigorous testing procedures by major health organizations worldwide, making of high quality the hallmark of its products and services offering. For this reason, a collaboration between OMRON Healthcare and the ISH was the natural step to further support the healthcare community in fighting against this silent killer.
André van Gils, Senior General Manager Global Sales & Marketing at OMRON Healthcare added that “OMRON Healthcare is very proud to be fuelling May Measurement Month with a new tender of devices, ensuring the continuation of the campaign. Hypertension can be a devastating condition and raising awareness of it will help drive improved healthcare for people across the world”.
*Due to existing restrictions to mobility, the campaign will extend their duration exceeding May, so that more people can get their blood pressure checked for free. The exact duration of the campaign in each country is decided by each national hypertension society.
